Tip 3: How To Thread Your Eyebrows

Updated: May 29, 2020

As a child, I studied how my hairdresser plaited & cornrowed and taught myself how to do my hair. When I got older I watched how the eyebrow lady threaded eyebrows and spent a day teaching myself how to thread my eyebrows. I've always loved DIY beauty, I love the fact that I don't have to rely on anyone to look my best. I can get myself together without running around looking for someone willing to break their quarantine just to shape my eyebrows.

Hopefully, with the below tips you'll be able to shape your eyebrows yourself or at least tidy them up without risking your health.

STEP 1: CLEAN & PREPARE YOUR EYEBROWS FOR THREADING

  • Clean your eyebrows with some rubbing alcohol. I do this to remove any oil, dirt or bacteria from the threading area.

  • Apply a little bit of powder to your eyebrows then brush them up.

  • If your eyebrows are very bushy you can trim them before you remove the hair, but not too short as they need to be long enough to thread.

STEP 2: CREATE THE DESIRED SHAPE

Use an eyebrow pencil to draw the eyebrow shape you want to achieve.

You can also use the below eyebrow guideline to create a perfect arch, but this is optional.

Remember, if this is too difficult just use the brow pencil to mark out your natural eyebrow shape.

STEP 3: THREADING YOUR EYEBROWS

Once you've outlined your preferred eyebrow shape you are ready to remove unwanted hairs.

  • Take about 18inches of thread and tie it to form a loop. The loop should be at least 6 inches long. Make sure its knotted tightly, I like to double knot mine.

  • Twist the loop a few times to create a little shuttle in the centre, I twist mine about 4- 6 times.

  • Practice opening and closing your index finger and thumb on each hand, this will move the shuttle in the centre back a forth.

This is the motion you will use to remove hair.

When you can control the movement of the shuttle you're ready to remove hair.

Press the triangle part of the tread against your skin, your unwanted hairs should be within the triangle. Move the shuttle in the opposite direction of hair growth like pictured.

You may find yourself using your more dominant hand to do most of the work, do not panic, this is what I find myself doing too. It just means you'll be moving the shuttle in the same direction of hair growth on one eyebrow. It will take slightly longer, and maybe harder grip unwanted hairs but you'll achieve the same results. See below video for example.

  • Go slowly, do not rush.

  • Remove unwanted hair in sections, using the thread triangle to guide you.

I use the top line of the thread to also mark out the unwanted hair I want to remove.

  • Stand back and review your progress regularly.
